Argentinian tangos and Russian orthodox mysticism are unlikely bed-fellows, however in the hands of acclaimed classical accordionist James Crabb these worlds find a compelling meeting place. The winner of ANAM’s 2021 Concerto Competition (cello 2021), Charlotte Miles joins James to perform Sofia Gubaidulina’s Seven Words for cello, accordion and strings.
“Two giants of 20th Century art music with unmistakable voices are the pioneering composers Sofia Gubaidulina and Astor Piazzolla. I’ve chosen three of their most significant orchestral works for this program where both composers push the expressive limits of their musical language and use of instrumentation to the absolute limits. The music is full of drama with highly evocative settings and contrasts taking the musicians and listener on an unforgettable emotional roller-coast ride! Gubaidulina celebrates her 90th birthday this year and it’s also the 100th anniversary for Piazzolla.” – James Crabb
