A Cathedral in Sound : Bach’s Mass in B minor
Bach’s Mass in B minor is an awe-inspiring, massive work and one that is seldom performed. But on 31 August, Heidelberg Choral Society will present a Melbourne performance of this compelling and uplifting Mass. Commenced in 1733, composed over a 25-year period and finished in the very last years of Bach’s life, his Mass in B minor has been described as a ‘cathedral in sound’. Lofty in design, scope and expression, and written during Bach’s time as Cantor of Leipzig, the Mass was not performed complete until 1859, more than a century after Bach’s death.
Under the baton of conductor Peter Bandy, the Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra will perform one concert only on 31 August.
Soloists are : Elena Xanthoudakis (soprano); Liane Keegan (contralto); Robert Macfarlane (tenor) and Christopher Hillier (baritone).
Bach’s Mass in B Minor is sublime; a significant work, comprehensively stunning in its emotional depth and universal appeal. Don’t miss your chance to hear Heidelberg Choral Society’s much-anticipated performance of an enduring Mass that Bach himself never heard in its entirety.
