Gloriana’s second subscription concert in its 2017 season is built around one of the most celebrated of all choral works: Thomas Tallis’ monumental forty-part motet Spem in alium, a work of such scale and vision that mark it as a watershed moment in music history.
Gloriana make a specialty of performing this work as the composer intended – in the round – so that the audience can follow the directional nature of the writing and be immersed in its sonic splendour. The opportunity to hear forty individual voices surrounding the audience is a singularly thrilling experience.
Tallis’ masterpiece will be woven into an all-English programme that includes Byrd’s equally imposing Tribue Domine, Herbert Howells’ deeply moving Requiem, Britten’s Five Flower Songs and works by Harris, Jonathan Dove and others.
