Carols in the Cathedral

Following sell out performances in previous years,  the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic again presents its much anticipated and popular Carols in the Cathedral concerts; and this year there will be THREE spectacular concerts of magnificent carols and descants, Christmas hymns, and glorious Christmas arias.

There will be the usual majestic fanfares, angelic descants and stirring carols that the audience always sings along with enthusiastically – a wonderfully spine-tingling effect when a thousand voices are raised in song in the wonderful cathedral acoustics.

Joining the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir, will be soprano Suzanne Shakespeare, tenor Henry Choo, the angelic voices of The Australian Children’s Choir,  members of  Melbourne University Choral Society, 14 players of the RMP Brass and Percussion Consort, as well harpist Jacinta Dennett, organist David Macfarlane, Pianists Stefan Cassomenos and Adam Cook, members of the City of Melbourne Highland Pipe Band and readers Roland Rocchiccioli and Julie Houghton will add their talents to make this a magical evening in the Christmas spirit.  All will be under the direction of RMP Chief Conductor Andrew Wailes.

“There is such beauty and dignity in the traditional Christmas music and words associated with Advent and Christmas, and over the years, the RMP Carols In the Cathedral concerts have been a wonderful celebration of the season, and are rapidly rivalling Handel’s Messiah as a ‘must-hear’ Christmas tradition for many Melburnians,,” says Wailes.

The program this year includes the traditional English and European carols, as well as some lesser known offerings from Russia, France, England and even as far away as Nigeria. According to Wailes, “there will be something for everyone [and] plenty of opportunities for the audience to have a good old sing”.
