One of the finest Australian conductors of his generation, Nicholas Carter, returns to ANAM to direct two symphonic masterpieces. It is hard not to listen in awe at the vast emotional range of Beethoven’s music, as he takes us from sorrow to joy, all the while overcoming phenomenal personal odds. The Fourth is a symphony of breathtaking lyricism, greatly admired by Berlioz and Schumann, and a perfect companion to Bruckner’s sublime song of spiritual ecstasy, his own Symphony no. 4. This is music which is truly knocking on heaven’s door.
