As part of Art Song Festival 2023, we are delighted to announce the visit of renowned pianist, accompanist, and scholar, Dr Graham Johnson OBE, who will present Schubert’s 1823 Project. The festival features a weekend of two performances, Secrets, Longing and Dreams, and Die schöne Müllerin , where audiences are invited to observe him working with our undergraduate, masters and recent Voice and Piano graduate students on this exciting project.
1823 was a pivotal year in Franz Schubert’s life. From the depths of despair after his syphilis diagnosis to the heights of creation, his output includes some of his best music for solo piano, as well as operas, but in the realm of Lieder, this year is extraordinary.
Starting Saturday October 7, the 1823 Project will feature performances of all Schubert songs written that fateful year, including some audience favourites, such as Du bist die Ruh and Nacht und Träume.
The festival will culminate on Sunday October 8 with a complete presentation of Die schöne Müllerin, the first of his great Song cycles. Graham Johnson is the greatest performer and scholar on Schubert’s Lieder and we are looking forward to collaborating with him on this ambitious project.
