Since many folk in the antipodes celebrate Christmas in Winter which for us is June -July, if you were also going to celebrate Epiphany it would be in August, wouldn’t it? Well that’s our excuse and there’s such a lot of great music around this holiday that we feel quite justified. It is a commemoration of the manifestation of Christ, especially to the Magi, but also at his baptism and at the wedding feast of Cana, and is celebrated on January 6. What is inexplicable is the connection to the Nativity of Christ since surely that’s where the story of the Three Kings comes in? Apparently even before 354, the Western Church had separated the celebration of the Nativity of Christ as the feast of Christmas and set its date as December 25; it reserved January 6 particularly for the Three Kings and their offering of gifts to the infant.
Anyway, the music is great and you know there’ll be some wonderful readings and heaps of images as well as appropriate refreshments after.
