The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank U. Pam present another program celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the death of Telemann.
Canary Cantata, Tania de Jong AM soprano; Viola Concerto in G major, Frank Pam viola; Trumpet Concerto in D major, Mark Fitzpatrick. Also “Ombra mai fu” from Handel’s Xerxes and two Mannheim Symphonies by Johann Stamitz (1717-1757) founder of the famous Mannheim orchestra which greatly influenced Mozart and others.
The Canary Cantata, on the death of his pet canary, is Telemann’s most personal and humorous cantata. The Viola Concerto is probably the first concerto for viola and is still popular today. The brilliant Trumpet Concerto displays Telemann’s skill at writing for different instruments.
