The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank U., Pam present the first of 2 concerts commemorating the 250th anniversary of the great German baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (16781-1767).
Outstanding soloists Anne Harvey-Nagl violin, Anne Gilby oboe and Sarah Lobegeiger de Rodriguez soprano perform Telemann Violin Concertos in A minor and G major; Oboe Concerto in F minor; Concerto for Oboe & Violin in C minor; Ascension Cantata “Gott will Mensch und sterblich werden”. Handel arias from Julius Caesar, Rinaldo and Joshua. In his lifetime Telemann was more famous and more universally admired than his friends Bach and Handel.
After a period of relative neglect (he was so prolific that he was thought to be superficial and too facile) his music is being re-evaluated and recognised for its endless inventiveness. He is regarded as an important forerunner of the Classical style.
