SHIR MADNESS Melbourne Sunday 3 September – from noon ‘til late
SHIR MADNESS returns to Melbourne to celebrate the Jewish contribution to music with 10 hours of joyous, riveting, moving & challenging performances of every imaginable kind. 30 acts will play on multiple, concurrent stages and a single ticket covers all acts all day. With the iconic festival alternating annually with Sydney, it’s Melbourne’s turn to celebrate in 2017.
Headlining the festival are the Australian debuts for both the incomparable New York trail blazers The Klezmatics and world-renowned US clarinet virtuoso David Krakauer’s Ancestral Groove. Australia’s “First Lady of Soul” Renée Geyer brings her unique vocal power to this extraordinary line-up too.
Shir Madness is also thrilled to announce the latest artists on the bill: Double Grammy Award winning pedal steel guitarist Lucky Oceans with his new song suite about 19th century Tasmanians, Indigenous Freedom Fighters, Bushrangers, Pioneer Women and other Early Settlers; Sephardic Oud Master Yohai Cohen; Kobi Oved’s Songs of Prayer; Melbourne-born Berlin-based Phia with her luscious and exotically-influence songs, Galit Klas & Brett Kaye as Chazzan & Chazzanit (cantorial music), Hello Tut Tut’s high energy klezmer (pictured above right) and middle eastern masters Zourouna.
They join Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, the Grigoryan Brothers, the Stiletto Sisters, Klezmania, Alter Jazz Ensemble, YID!, Tal Cohen, Temple of Song, Sonya Lifschitz, Annie Lee from the Kransky Sisters, the Fem Belling Quintet and Alma Mater with their fiery Portuguese Fado.
Plus the return of Song of Songs, featuring the cream of Australia’s musical community, each singing one of their favourite songs by a Jewish composer. Announcements coming soon!
Festival Director Deborah Conway said: “Willy Zygier, Artistic Director, and I are excited to be at the helm once again of this wonderful day that celebrates community and diversity with incredible music. What a brilliant way to spend Father’s Day. Bring your kids! Better still, let your kids bring you!”
More artist announcements are still to come and don’t forget you can see ALL these performers for the price of one ticket, so book now! www.shirmadness.com
