Music from Dresden and Berlin: Triumph of the Mixed Taste

Frederick Augustus I, Elector of Saxony, and Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, were both known as patrons of the arts. Their courts, in Dresden and Berlin respectively, provided opportunities for musicians to experiment in mixing French and Italian styles of composition and performance. A tasteful mixture was most highly prized. The Melbourne Baroque Orchestra’s third concert in its 2017 series contains works by Heinichen, Quantz, CPE Bach and Frederick the Great himself, that demonstrate different combinations of French and Italian elements.
