In partnership with Kew Court House’s Future Classic series, Rubiks presents The cold earth slept below;
a program of breathtaking beauty inspired by the Winter Solstice, exploring the intertwined themes of death and renewal in human lives and the natural world.
This performance will feature Donatoni’s sparkling Ave for glockenspiel, piccolo and celeste, and the Australian premieres of major works by two Pulitzer Prize winning composers: Julia Wolfe’s fiercely virtuosicSinging in the dead of night, and David Lang’s haunting song cycle, death speaks. Evoking the stillness of cold winter nights and the hopeful promise of spring, The cold earth slept below is a celebration of the fragility and resilience of life.
Bringing together some of Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers, Rubiks is dedicated to the proliferation and celebration of contemporary music in Australia in all of its contexts. Formed at the Australian National Academy of Music, these dynamic musicians have quickly established a reputation for excellence and delighting audiences with their unique programming.
