The many faces of the Baroque’s great genius
No name is more synonymous with Baroque music than Bach. Through his prolific output, he brought the musical language of the time to the pinnacle of its expressive power, fusing intellect, technique and emotion into some of the most enduring music of all. This program explores the enormous range of contrasting moods and colours in Bach’s music, from the sublime cantatas to his ecstatic and virtuosic string concerti.
Sara Macliver is a musical living treasure. Her superb soprano voice is the perfect vehicle for the moving Bach arias she performs with MCO in this program. Sara also performs Calvin Bowman’s lush song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life) which was written for her and premiered with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010. The program also showcases brilliant young violinist Anne-Marie Johnson as the soloist in Bach’s demanding D minor Violin Concerto.
