Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is one of the most iconic and revered sacred works for voice, composed in the final weeks of the composer’s life. Of the opening duet, philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau said: ‘It is the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer’.
For our first 2018 subscription concert, we are thrilled to be presenting Pergolesi’s masterpiece with soloists Cristina Russo and Herald Sun Aria Winner Max Riebl. We will be joined by a handpicked orchestra of some of Melbourne’s finest period instrumentalists.
Also in the program – opera arias by Handel, choral works by Bach, Monteverdi, Gibbons, and the final scene from Purcell’s Dido and Æneas – featuring Dido’s celebrated lament “When I am laid in earth”>
