Barry Conyngham: Ice Carving
Join us for a special performance of Barry Conyngham’s Ice Carving, featuring Conservatorium string students and staff member Sophie Rowell.
Composed in Japan in 1970 while studying with Tōru Takemitsu, the work takes its inspiration from the ice sculptures of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace gardens, tracing a sculpture’s life from raw block to finished form, melting in the heat of the sun. Scored for solo violin and string orchestra, the piece explores the textural language of ice: crystalline, prismatic, jagged, melting.
Ice Carving is a particularly successful and striking product of the growing interest in Asian music and aesthetics among a new generation of Australian composers in the early 1970s. – Classic Australia, ABC
