Gloriana: Rachmaninoff Vespers

June 19, 2016 @ 2:30 pm

For our second 2016 subscription concert we are delighted to be presenting one of the most cherished of all choral works – the Rachmaninoff Vespers.

The Vespers stand as the crowning achievement of the Golden Age of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music. First heard in March 1915, the Vespers instantly caught the public’s imagination and its popularity has never waned. Rachmaninoff drew his texts for the Vespers from a set of fifteen psalms and hymns associated with the Easter Vigil. Plainsong melodies from a variety of sources are used extensively. Rachmaninoff also calls for a much-divided choir and a prominently featured third bass section. Rachmaninoff’s music in the Vespers elevates the spirit through its emotional power and captivates the ear by its sheer beauty.

Don’t miss the chance to hear this magnificent work live in concert.
